Redington

John Redington

Mr. Redington was born in Galway County, Ireland, February 2, 1831, and at the age of 16 (1847) years emigrated to America and settled in Utica, New York. He was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a fireman (1847-1854) . In 1854 he came to Illinois and settled in Madison County and began farming. On August 20, 1861, he married Bridget Connors. In the spring of 1862, he settled on his farm(pictured right) in Western Mound, Macoupin County, where he lived until his death. Mr. Redington was the father of six daughters, two who proceeded him to the grave. His daugthers who survived him were Mrs. Charles Robinson, Mrs. George Bauer, Mrs. Stephen Bauer, and Mrs. Michael Hayes. He had fifteen grandchildren and Philip Redington, whom he raised, he being left an orphan at an early age.

In the century between 1820 and 1920 some four and a quarter million people left Ireland to come to the United States. By 1850, after the potato famine, the Irish had replaced the English as the chief source of new settlers. In 1853, all small railroads from Albany, New York, to Buffalo, and several in the vicinity of Schenectady merged into the New York Central. Among these were the Utica Schenectady Railroad and the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. John Redington was perhaps on one of the first trains which ran west. " Please note that Maurice Bauer died a few days after Bridget in the first round of flu in 1917, Maurice attended Blackburn College. " (source Norman Dennis Bowman)
